Court paves way for Ugandan President to run for sixth term

Uganda’s top court paved the way Thursday for the country’s 74-year-old leader Yoweri Museveni to seek a sixth term in office, upholding a ruling to scrap presidential age limits.
The Supreme Court dismissed a challenge by Museveni’s opponents, who had appealed against a constitutional court ruling that removed an age cap of 75 for presidential contenders.
“This appeal therefore fails,” Chief Justice Bart Katureebe declared in handing down the court’s majority 4-3 verdict. The decision allows Museveni who has ruled Uganda since seizing power at the head of a rebel army in 1986 to seek re-election in polls due in 2021. Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana declared the verdict “a big win for Uganda”.
“We are elated. This is a sign of how democracy has taken root in our country,” he told AFP. But a lawyer for the petitioners, Erias Lukwago, said “it is democracy that suffers”. “It is a disappointment, but in Africa it is a miracle to win (against) a sitting government,” he told AFP.

With over 900 million people eligible to vote, India is about to hold the biggest election in history

India’s general elections, the biggest democratic exercise in the world, get underway this month and will decide the leadership and direction of the country of 1.3 billion people for the next five years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party came to power with a historic landslide victory in the last national polls, in 2014. But his promises of “achhe din,” or better days ahead, have given way to disappointment over sluggish economic growth, discontent among farmers and rising unemployment, making the race more of a contest than many expected. The logistics of ensuring free and fair elections for the largest voter base in the world are complex and overwhelming. Here’s a look at India’s elections, by the numbers:
900 million: Eligible voters More than 900 million Indians nearly three times the entire U.S. population will be eligible to cast ballots. That includes 45 million people who turned 18 and became eligible to vote since 2014.

New FIFA ranking: Super Eagles move to third in Africa

The Super Eagles are now ranked third in Africa after moving up four places to 42 in the latest FIFA ranking released on Thursday. The three-time African champions earned wins against Seychelles and Egypt in the last international window, which pushed them up the ranking.
Senegal’s national team, the Teranga Lions, are Africa’s top team while second-place Tunisia, Morocco (fourth) and the DR Congo (fifth), complete the top five slots for Africa. Along with Ghana, they were the only African teams to make the top 50.
The biggest mover in March was Tanzania (131st, up 6) – coached by Nigerian Emmanuel Amuneke – having booked their place at the Africa Cup of Nations after 39 years in the doldrums. With 150 games played across the globe during the international period, things remained tight at the top of the ranking, as the top three remained unchanged.
This sees Belgium (1st, unchanged) maintain a slender lead growing it marginally to three points over 2018 World Cup winners France (2nd,…
